Civil Engineering Intern

What I liked

This internship allowed me to rotate from one group to the next halfway through the summer. I spent the first 4 weeks with the water resources/drainage team and the next 4 weeks with the transportation planning team. This allowed me to dip my toe into two different disciplines and helped me clarify my interests. I got to work on a variety of tasks from a variety of projects and I learned a lot! It was also great to connect with people from multiple groups and expand my network!

What I wish was different

It was difficult to work a brand new job during a pandemic when the experience was mostly virtual. However, it went as smoothly as possible, and most of the challenges related to COVID were not preventable by the company itself; rather, they were unfortunate circumstances that we all worked through together. This did make it difficult to experience the company culture, but I was grateful for the experience and still learned a lot.

Advice

Take initiative to reach out to people on your teams! Especially when work is virtual, it's extremely important to make the effort to connect with others. They have a lot to teach you!

Atkins is an international engineering, design and project management consultancy that gives you the opportunity to be a part of major projects. I’ve enjoyed being able to expand my engineering skills across a range of applications.

What I wish was different

Advice

Internships are great opportunities to experiment with different aspects of your field. If the opportunity is there, I recommend trying to rotate through them to gain a better understanding of your field and where your passion lies within it.
