Civil Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Great team, with very helpful people in every department readily available to answer any questions that might come up. Office culture is not too stuffy, and quiet when most people are working from home. Free bagel Fridays. Happy Hour after work Fridays. Kitchen on every floor. Arup works on amazing projects and is a globally recognized design firm, so you have the opportunity to learn a lot.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of the people you have access to, everyone is willing to answer questions and talk about what they're working on. There are training modules available on pretty much any topic, so also take as many as you can. Go to the happy hours to meet people across different departments.

Advanced Digital Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Fast-paced environment with a breadth of interesting projects that require technical skills such as programming (python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS), GIS (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro), and cloud services (AWS). The Advanced Digital Engineering (ADE) team is a forward-thinking, young, and dynamic team focused on developing digital solutions for problems in the built environment. It was stimulating and rewarding to apply my Civil Engineering foundation and Data Science/programming skillset to the projects I worked on.

What I wish was different

I just wish I was in person so I could've met some of the team members in person. However, the virtual aspect of the internship proved to be fruitful as I was able to work with members across the United States and even some in Europe. My colleagues were all very approachable and I was still able to form some solid relationships.

Advice

Don't be afraid to branch out and connect with members from the other teams at Arup -- you can even find yourself some interesting work, as a portion of the ADE work is internal. I ended up developing a tool for the Energy and Sustainability team and enjoyed expanding my network at the company.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Arup gave me a hands on look into what the architectural engineering field is like. I was able to work on a wide variety of projects and gained valuable insight about the engineering design process. I was surprised at the amount of work I was able to accomplish as an intern and feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity.

What I wish was different

I really appreciated going on sight visits to see firsthand what the assignment is and to better visualize the end result. I wish there were more opportunities to go on site visits and do more "out of office" work.

Advice

Working at Arup has sharpened my business skills immensely. I was given several opportunities to present and speak publicly about the work I had been doing. Workers at Arup should be comfortable with their public speaking skills.

What I liked

I have never worked in such a welcoming and productive community. The variety of duties and responsibilities were endless, and the people there were amazingly helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more confidence in myself when I first started at Arup. Everything there was encouraging me to succeed, from the supportive staff to the online resources, but because I yet found my potential, I didn't use all of Arup as I could have.

Advice

Go in with confidence that you can grow, and an understanding that you have much to learn. Take full advantage of the opportunities Arup provides - from weekly events, to top-notch technology - because you Will come out knowing more about engineering, as well as yourself.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My supervisor made sure I got to experience every part of our team, and I left Arup with a well-rounded understanding of the impact mechanical and aerospace engineers have on design for the built environment. Although I was initially assigned to a project I found boring, I eventually found my niche with a different group and was able to connect my prior experiences and interests with an industry I'd previously known nothing about. They were also very quick with the return offer - I had graduate hire paperwork in my hands within a week of my last day.

What I wish was different

Unlike other engineering environments I've worked in, Arup is a rather formal work environment. No tech-startup-esque beanbags or wildly flexible work hours, and you're expected to dress business casual four days of the week (most of your full time coworkers will be dressing up all five). I was a little bit uncomfortable with this as a young person with a background in lab and startup environments, but the formality wasn't too hard to adjust to and the company will hopefully change with the times.

Advice

Get to know everyone you can. Arup is an extremely international company full of crazy talented people and everyone around you has an interesting story about how they ended up sitting in that seat. Live in Manhattan. It's worth it.

The company culture, including the communication with leadership as well as values of the company, the exciting projects and the multi-disciplinary aspect of the office.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a more direct relationship with my supervisor and more conversations regarding my career development.

Advice

Don't wait until someone gives you work to do. Instead, try to ask your teammates or even other teams for more work.
