Arizona State Senate

Page

January 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Being a Senate Page has been one of the most formative and positive experiences in my entire life. After having always been passionate about politics, there was something magical about being immersed in the legislature. Getting to see the day in day out operations of the State Legislature was professionally enlightening and personally satisfying. A special thank you to Jenna Lyon who molded me into the professional I am today.

Advice

Soak it in! The Page Program will fly right by you if you're not careful. This opportunity does not come around every day and you have to seize the day and love what you do in the moment or you'll miss it.

Senate Page

January 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Being able to staff committees and floor sessions is one of the most unique ways to learn first hand about the Arizona legislative process.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to sit in on more committees and learn more about different areas in our government.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions! Chances are someone else has the same question and you should be constantly trying to learn during this internship. No one has all of the answers when they first start a job anyways!

research intern

January - May 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The opportunities available through the internship were incredible. I got to work with stakeholders, produce fact sheets used in committee, and give formal presentations in committee and caucus. The skills I learned were real and have had immediate effects on my school and subsequent positions

What I wish was different

The only difficulty that arose was moving from Tucson to Phoenix; housing was a challenge because of the term of the internship and the cost of housing compared to the stipend. However, the Senate does provide a moving reimbursement and assists in finding housing.

Advice

Take every opportunity presented-- go to as many meetings as possible, eat lunch on the mall with various lobbyist groups, take on challenging bills, and attend floor sessions/other committees/deliberations in the other chamber/conference committees/etc. The richness of the internship really comes out in those moments.
