Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

Even though this internship was remote (COVID-19), I personally liked how the recruiters and the engineers did their best to accommodate what they could to provide a great internship experience. I gained good insight into different architectural of software and learned about different parts of the software development lifecycle.

What I wish was different

An in-person internship would have been preferred, but I am thankful for the chance to have this virtual experience during a global pandemic.

Advice

Knowing Java would be a good plus and just willingness to learn and try new things.

What I liked

I loved the environment. The people were great and I got to have a real voice in all my team meetings. Appian tried to place me on a team that best fit my interests and they succeeded. I found the work to be incredibly interesting and rewarding. They have many fun events like after work basketball.

What I wish was different

I was there during the headquarters move and there were a few moving bumps like figuring out the best AC settings in the new building, etc. Other than small things like that, I loved it.

Advice

Look for a place that compliments you. Appian and I fit together really well and that makes the experience great. If we did not compliment each other, I think the experience would not have been as great.

What I liked

The work was really interesting, and I learned a lot. I got to choose what team to work on. We had a lot of autonomy and got to do the same work full-time software engineers were doing, but the interns on my squad also got to own our own project. The office is really cool, and the people were really fun and nice.

What I liked

Great chance to experience corporate work environment, fantastic people, fun place to work. Loved going to work every day. Learned a lot in the process.

What I wish was different

Didn't get the chance to work with other interns much as we were in different departments.

Advice

Employers are most looking for people who are willing and excited to learn, not necessarily for people who know everything already. Don't be afraid to be honest when you don't know something.
