Appalachian Mountain Club

Trail Pro Crew

May - August 2023 • Russell, MA

What I liked

Four day work weeks (10 hr days), rewarding physical work, outdoors all the time, potential for overtime, great coworkers, food and housing

What I wish was different

Advice

If you're looking for a summer job this is a great one. Won't boost your resume so much if you're looking for anything other than outdoor leadership, but it's awesome work and really rewarding.

I really enjoyed the different opportunities within the job, and I was able to learn a lot more than I expected.

Croo

June 2018 • Meredith, NH

What I liked

Three Mile Island is a magical place and I love to help it run. The community of campers (guests) and croo (staff) is super friendly and makes the entire summer a blast.

What I wish was different

I hate leaving Three Mile and it makes everything else seem less fun and fulfilling.

Advice

I love it here! Come paint, cook, drive boats, and live in one of the most spectacular places on earth.

Trail Crew Leader

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved working outside and getting to teach teenagers about their local environment and conservation. I also really liked the hands-on and involved approaches that my supervisors had to their positions, while still letting me and my co-leader operate independently.

What I wish was different

Not much. I do wish that the pay was a little higher–the cost of living in Boston ate up a lot of my paycheck, but that was expected.

Advice

Get good hiking boots! The physical labor aspect of this job wasn't exaggerated in the job description.

Hut Crew

May 2018 • Randolph, NH

What I liked

The ability to share my passion for the outdoors while making connections and memories with like-minded people. The physical endurance needed for this job pushed me into a healthy growth zone.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve stayed at the job longer than three months!

Advice

It’s for those with a strong passion for experiential learning and customer service. You will be cooking for a group of guests each night, packing food and supplies on your back to a remote high mountain hut, and assisting in search and rescues.

Intern

January - February 2017 • Portland, ME

What I liked

Being able to attend environmental hearings, sit in on coalition meetings, and create content for AMC's social media page and events. It was also really fun to be working in Downtown Portland.

What I wish was different

I would have appreciated a little more explanation on how environmental advocacy and policymaking occurs in Maine, I was confused about what was going on a lot of the time.

Advice

Definitely do this internship! Pay attention when you are shadowing.
