Anadarko Petroleum Corporation

Reservoir Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Midland, TX

What I liked

Exposure to the Permian Basin, particularly the Delaware Basin (within Permian) as this is arguably the most prolific play in the world right now. I also gained a lot of skills and knowledge in an area that I previously had minimal experience. Met a lot of great people, made good connections, and was able to see a lot of cool places during my time in Midland.

What I wish was different

The location wasn't my favorite because there isn't much around (without driving), but this is where a lot of people in oil and gas end up right now. Reservoir engineering also is not one of my preferred disciplines as it is very technical and academic, and I prefer more operational-related roles at this point. However, experiencing this new discipline helped me learn a lot.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can, build your network, and make sure that you start of your internship my setting expectations with your mentor and/or supervisor on what they want from you, how often you should check in, etc.

Construction Project Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Platteville, CO

What I liked

The project was very interesting and meeting new people always open new doors.

What I wish was different

It is a male industry and I felt that I was kind of not part of the group. I would like to change that and make the industry more inclusive.

Land Administration Intern III

May - August 2019 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I liked the interesting projects that actually provided value for the company. I also enjoyed the opportunity to work with people from many different backgrounds in different departments.

What I wish was different

During my time at Anadarko the company was being bought by another petroleum corporation. This had an impact on the experience, and on the employees who worked there on a daily basis.

Advice

Network the entire time, get out of your comfort zone and make relationships with as many people as you can.

Petroleum Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Midland, TX

What I liked

The people first culture was very welcoming and a clearly everyone cares about each other. People are willing to work together to come up with a solution instead of butting heads.

What I wish was different

The company was going through a merger during my internship tenure, so there was a lot of stress going around for everyone. There was really nothing anybody could’ve done to resolve this though.

Advice

If I was giving advice to a future intern, I’d say to dive in head first and ask a lot of questions. Put yourself out there and meet as many people that you can because they will be the people you are working for in the future years if you get a return offer.

What I liked

I enjoyed the people and the meaningful projects I worked on. Anadarko also provided an incredible apartment downtown.

What I wish was different

I wish Anadarko had not been acquired by Occidental because I loved working there!

Advice

Always network and put in maximum effort and don’t let a slow market/acquisitions get you down.

What I liked

The Anadarko culture is extremely welcoming and inviting. You are assigned a summer project to give meaningful feedback to the company.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had started a week or two earlier than it did.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can and be sociable! It is important that you step out of your comfort zone so that you can make as much out of your summer experience as possible.

Advice

Interning with a company can be so beneficial because you get to experience the job you will be performing and decide if that job is something you want to do in life. You get to see firsthand if the company is ethical and how employees and employee thoughts are treated and handled. I would highly recommend having an internship with a potential future employer.
