What I liked

Challenging, given a lot of independence and responsibility but also worked with a great, supportive team. Loved the equal collaboration with our partner agency and local youth. Got to know multiple communities in a particular region of the country. Excellent for structured professional development and growth. Thorough and constructive feedback is built into the Amigos model. Mix of being traveling alone and living with a team. All expenses are paid, including flights, but no further stipend is given.

What I wish was different

Amigos does its job well! Some small changes given my exact circumstances, but nothing huge. Amigos guarantees an incredible experience full of challenge, great people, growth, and hard work!

Advice

Be prepared to work nonstop for the entire experience. There are no days off. But do it anyway!! The hard work is full of passion, and it is exactly what makes the experience so rewarding!!

What I liked

This job gave me a space for me to work on growing personally and professionally. I learned how to respond with grace in very stressful situations. There was a great team environment, and I got very close with my coworkers. I had a lot of contact with local Ecuadorians and got to experience a different way of life.

What I wish was different

There were no days off for three months straight, so by the end of the summmer my coworkers and I were all exhausted.

Advice

This job is not for the faint of heart. Significant experience adapting to different environments is very helpful, and fluency in Spanish is necessary. Every single day is difficult, and it is up to each person in this role to make sure they are taking care of themselves emotionally and physically through the rigorous experience.

It was an outstanding opportunity to practice Spanish, receive experience working internationally, and gain professional skills. Feedback is a crucial part of the organization's structure.

What I wish was different

There was very little free time: expect to be on the clock at all times.

Advice

Take advantage of the amount of independence you have to develop your leadership and decision-making skills. There are resources available when needed, but you're expected to handle problems yourself if possible.
