What I liked

I like the creativity given to instructors on how to run their classes. While we were required to follow a structured lesson plan for each level, the way we taught this material was left largely up to the instructors (so for example, if the goal was to get preschool students comfortable with going underwater, we had the creative freedom to come up with ways to do so, such as games or group work or methods previously covered in our training sessions).

What I wish was different

I wish that instructors received a short break between classes, even just three to five minutes, in order to transition more smoothly from level to level. It is difficult to speak to parents at the end of class to address any comments or concerns when the next class starts immediately as soon as the other ends and may even be on the other side of the pool!

Advice

I would advise any future instructors or individuals interested in becoming swim teachers to relax and have fun with the classes! These students come to you to learn how to be safe in the water and it is your responsibility to execute that but also create an engaging learning environment. At the end of the day they will learn more if they are excited to come and enjoy the water.
