Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked everything in my internship. I learned a lot about the software engineering in real world and I also made lots of valuable connections. The company is really big so there is plenty of room for opportunities and growing network. Besides that, I became friends with people from various schools like Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, or NYU.

What I wish was different

Everything was perfect. I was also lucky to get managers who were eager to invest their time in teaching me.

Advice

I would strongly recommend to start looking for internships as early as possible - high school or freshman year of college. It is very valuable and fun experience.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Current employees were very helpful and patient. Limited knowledge is expected because they want to help you learn more and grow. You were able to work with people not on the same professional level as you and work with them on your own or other projects.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

I was lucky to be put with such great team members, but I knew some other interns that weren't as lucky. However, if you talk with the recruiters about putting you on a different team, they are very accommodating and there is no bad blood with other teams.

I wish I had chose something different to do because I didn’t really like my project but i did learn a lot of new things through the internship.

Digital Product Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Incredible work culture, including lots of events, coffee chats, great hours (9-5), and lots of resources. Also, the work was very meaningful. Each intern was ingrained into a team and given a meaningful project to work on throughout the 10 weeks.

What I wish was different

There is not much that I would change if I could.

Advice

Make sure to meet as many of people as you can and take advantage of the coffee chat culture. Being an intern an Amex puts you in an incredible position with lots of resources. Don't miss out on the opportunity to benefit from them! Everyone at Amex – regardless of how high up they are – is generally happy to help interns learn from their experience.

Summer Intern

June - July 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I received this position through the Public Policy Society at Villanova University. Alumni in the society who live in the DC area will post internships at their work for Villanova students to apply to. I was able to meet Mr. Loper, who runs the American Express Government Affairs office, at Villanova on the Hill a few months prior. I am a Political Science major interested in business. I very much enjoyed learning about American Express as a company, and seeing the intersection between Amex's company goals and policy priorities. I loved working in the office as everyone was friendly. I learn a lot about what it means to be an intern in an office. Living in DC was also a great experience as it is a vibrant city.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known going in how much "busy work" is actually a part of being an intern. The hours can be long and tedious but the work IS valuable. Additionally, in this position I was the only intern. It can be very lonely to work alone, and I had a hard time meeting people within my GWU housing.

Advice

Work as hard as you can. Ask as many questions as you need. ALWAYS ask office members if you can help them. Be friendly.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been longer!

Advice

Meet as many new people as possible, across all lines of business. Learn as much about Amex as you possibly can, so you know what you're interested if you're fortunate enough to receive a return offer.
