Ameren

Operations intern

June - August 2023 • Portland, MO

What I liked

My favorite part of this experience was the opportunity to job shadow every department at the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant, and be introduced to every inner workings that goes into running such a facility

What I wish was different

There is not a whole lot that I would have changed. If I were to be knit-picky, I would have liked the experience to have lasted longer. Maybe an opportunity to visit the office in St. Louis.

Advice

I wound advice before going into this experience to have a willingness to learn and be coachable. It helps if you are looking to form working relationships with everyone you run into as well.

Substation Design Intern

May - December 2022 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I liked the culture at Ameren. The environment is very inclusive and focuses on safety of everyone.

What I wish was different

In my experience it took a little while to get a mentor engineer assigned to me, but that was also due to a lot of movement within the team at the time.

Advice

Ask many questions! The engineers love to answer the questions to clear things up for you. Asking questions also shows the engineers that you are interested and invested in the work done at Ameren.

Mechanical Engineer Co-Op

January - August 2022 • Pawnee, IL

What I liked

Very good management. My boss and his boss were extremely nice and always teaching me new things

What I wish was different

Wish I could have overseen more project kickoffs, but I did oversee one.

Advice

I had a hybrid schedule so having a home setup with at least 2 monitors is helpful for at home days or else your productivity may take a hit because I often had a LOT of different tabs and things open at once for my work.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Portland, MO

What I liked

Every person I interacted with was extremely friendly and went out of their way to make sure all of the interns were included.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person instead of remote, but given the circumstances it was a fine alternative.

Advice

Be wiling to setup meetings with people outside of your group just so you can meet more people and build your network within the company and industry.

Electrical Engineering Co-op

January - August 2019 • Peoria, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company culture as well as all of the people I met and networked with. I also enjoyed how I was given real work to do that actually made a difference instead of just doing busy work.

What I wish was different

One of the things I wish had been different is the location. Peoria, IL, is a far drive from home for me, but I always like seeing new places and experiencing life from different places.

Advice

Ameren is a great company to work for, and if you get the chance to take a co-op then definitely do so. Whether it's at Ameren or not, a co-op is the best way to tell what you're going to be doing after graduation because you can take on bigger projects and more responsibilities than you would be able to do in an internship.
