I have been able to make personal connections with caregivers and help direct them to the resources that they need!

I wish I could contribute more time, but with full time work and school it hasn’t been possible.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to jump in and ask questions! Remember that as interns we aren’t supposed to have all the answers. It is important to be a hard worker and find tasks that you can make a difference on in your work!

Public Health Educator

What I liked

I liked the work the organization provided to the community Office is nice very organized The workers were super nice and my supervisor was amazing gave me a lot of opportunities to learn and work with other departments. I also loved all my patients and learning about the disease and trying to help families cope with the disease

What I wish was different

Diversity, there is no diversity in this office it was hard at first, being the only African American member in the team. Everything was awkward at first but as continued to go to the office things got better I also wish there was a job offer or a payed salary because this internship does required 360 hrs completed. Which equals to 30 hrs a week in the office and it’s difficult maintaining a job while going the internship

Advice

Research about the organization make sure this what you want to do. This internship will give you opportunities to learn about the disease and meet individuals with the disease. Be sure you are aware about the topic and the type of environment. It can be mentally and physically challenging at times. It might trigger you. But very rewarding at the end

Social Engagement Intern

What I liked

I was given amazing hands on experience where I was able to go to social programs for individuals living with early stage Alzheimer’s and other related Dementias and their care partners as well as create future meet ups.

What I wish was different

I wish it was paid. But I still got unmeasurable experience.

Advice

To stay on top of work and be attentive. Also, being friendly,outgoing, and high energy helps.

Marketing Intern

What I liked

I loved the environment of the workplace. Mostly middle to older aged women - it felt like I was working with a bunch of moms who all had my best interest at heart. They wanted to tailor the internship to reach my goals and interests. I liked working closer in the graphic design field because I learned a lot about programs that I had not really worked with before (i.e. Adobe inDesign). I also learned a lot about working for a nonprofit.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship would've been paid and that I would've been able to continue my work for them. I had to stop because I needed a paying job, although I continued to volunteer for them a bit once my internship had ended. I saw firsthand how much money plays into job roles at a nonprofit. While I was there, they had to let go of two people due to budget cuts, and while they wanted to hire me on, they could not due to budget.

Advice

My advice would be to learn how to accept constructive criticism. Throughout my experience, I would have to draft multiple designs before reaching the final piece that the group agreed on. This could be trying at times, especially when you feel like you've made the best possible design, but people still want to make more changes. In the end, the outcome turns out even better than expected. So, I've learned that it's important to learn to accept criticism without getting down on yourself.

What I liked

I loved that I was given meaningful tasks and projects to complete and was trusted to handle them using my own strategies and unique methods. I really enjoyed being able to experience working at a nonprofit organization and seeing the work that is put into various large scale fundraising events.
