What I liked

Meaningful work, corporate culture matches my personality type, and excellent leadership at all levels.

What I wish was different

This is my first post-military career and it's been great so far. I don't wish for changes, I work to fix the problems.

Advice

Expand your network by joining clubs and organizations you're interested in you never know when/where an opportunity will arise! I joined the Army Reserves and met many like-minded people who were able to help me land a job in my career field. I also joined a bagpipes and drum band after moving to Dayton, OH and received job offers (side gigs and full-time jobs) through members of the band as well.

Data Science Engineer I

What I liked

Good learning experience and got a better sense of what real work will look like. Flexible working hours (any 8 hours per business day between 8am and 6pm). Fun but serious and skilled work environment. They provide free snacks and beverages.

What I wish was different

Location -- I'm not from NOVA and I didn't like it at all; also had an hour commute in heavy traffic every day. I didn't work closely with any other data scientists besides a phone call every week or so to the head data scientist. Also, my boss for the project I was working on was at a different location which I commuted to weekly, so I didn't have the access to resources I would have liked. The portion of the project I was working on was development heavy, so I didn't get too much data science experience beyond implementing a pre-chosen ML algorithm in the last week of the summer (after pipe-lining a feature engineering script with populating and querying databases). The security clearance process is not fun.

Advice

I still have yet to do it, but try to work at a company with full-time data scientists or a dedicated team -- at least to start out and gain some experience.
