Field Technician

May - August 2019 • West Chester Township, OH

What I liked

I could work the hours that I wanted to, and it was very much hands on work. Very easy to learn from.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been giving more responsibility.

Advice

You can receive very valuable professional experience in fields that may not be what you want to work in the future.

Civil Engineering Technician

May - August 2018 • Lafayette, IN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the outdoor experience and working on construction sites. It was helpful being close to home. After getting the hang of the job it was nice to look over engineering plans and talk to the construction workers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time spent with the actual engineers rather than just testing. I was kind of expecting time working on projects with a engineer to shadow me, but as a technician you learn the tests and are sent on your way.

Advice

Make sure you apply for the correct internship and understand what it is you'll be doing. I rushed into it and found the technician was actually jus the testing and not actual design which is what I expected engineers to do. I still had a great time being outdoors. As a technician the hours were also a little variable. If it rained I got 2 maybe 3 hours that day. If it was a good productive or near the end of a deadline day I maybe worked 10-12 hours.
