Albion College

Corporate & Foundation Relations Intern

January - September 2018 • Albion, MI

What I liked

I got a good look at applying for and reviewing grants, and all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into garnering a grant. I also got to work closely on some alumni engagement events which were very exciting.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more work within the CFR team than external to it. I spent most of the summer doing work for the other components of the office than work for the CFR team, which was great, but I wish I had done more in the field I was hired for.

Advice

Take it very seriously, as a lot of people depend on a job well done.

Summer Tour Guide

May - August 2018 • Albion, MI

What I liked

I loved having a job every day over the summer, and I made a lot of money this way! I also loved meeting all of the possible students that could make Albion their home. More personally, I loved getting more comfortable talking with a lot of people, and getting practice with planning events, scheduling meetings, and getting the day to day office life.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more opportunities for different tasks. Sometimes we finished our tasks early, and had nothing to do. Although this gave me the opportunity to make my own changes and suggestions around the office. For example, I made a new organizational system and made info cards for new tour guides.

Advice

When you are given tasks, go above and beyond with them to show you're serious about even the little things.

Summer FURSCA-student researcher

May - August 2018 • Albion, MI

What I liked

It is a great experience in terms of working with a professional philosopher to do my own investigation of a classical research question. My advisor is extremely helpful for making sure that I stay on the right track when make progress for research. I obtained better sense of how I could apply knowledge of philosophy to my life. The way I organize my research also helps to organize my other goals in life. As for academics, my reading and writing skills both improved a lot during the summer because of the intensive but interesting research experiences.

What I wish was different

I only hope that I could have more time to develop my research further, so I could produce more better works.

Advice

I think, for any students who are generally interested in applying for graduate programs, obtain more undergraduate research experiences could be really beneficial for the applications.
