Pharmaceutical and Agricultural Science Intern
June - July 2019 • Huntsville, AL
What I liked
After completing my long term project in research during this internship, I realized that I have a genuine interest in research, and would love to pursue research in my graduate studies. However, I would say the most rewarding component of the program to me was the K-12 STEM outreach. One of my favorite memories was when we volunteered for an elementary school summer STEM program, in which I ran an experiment entitled “Strawberry DNA” with PreK-6th grade students, in which we use basic lab techniques to withdraw DNA from strawberries. The experiment was messy and a little exhausting, but it was an honor to explain DNA to kids, and watch them get inspired to learn more.

I wish it was longer!
Advice
I recommend that future interns applying to this or any internship refine their communication skills and arrive with an open mind. It is so important to ask questions, speak up when you’re unsure of things, and maintain a constant line of communication with your mentors. In life, many doors will remain closed, unless you speak up and express interest to open them. This internship exposed to so many facets of STEM, agricultural science, outreach, and research. Every intern left with a whole new perspective on their futures (including myself), so it was imperative that we arrived with an open mind and a willingness to be molded by our mentors.

Summer Intern
June - July 2019 • Huntsville, AL
What I liked
It was not your ordinary internship. We did a lot of recreational activities outdoors and were mentored by different Regional Extension Agents.
What I wish was different
I wish it could have been longer as it was only 6 weeks!
