Fantastic background experience, a great way to dip your toes in the civilian defense industry.
What I wish was different
Not project focused (for me). The experience was totally different for each intern that was in the program. Higher expectations and hopes for the interns would have been nice.
Advice
Learn all you can, ask as many questions as possible, "bother" people to learn about what they do, and keep notes on what you are doing and contributing to over the summer.

Mechanical Engineering Intern
May - August 2018 • El Segundo, CA
What I liked
I really liked the personnel and the culture of the workplace. Working for the Air Force really brings a sense of fulfillment and you can easily see how you can make an impact in our community. I enjoyed how all the people I interacted with wanted to help me and give me advice, which made it easier to find a mentor and grow in a short amount of time.
What I wish was different
I wish that I was able to contribute more. In this field there is a large learning curve which requires a lot of time to become adjusted to how things are done and because of this, a short internship is not much time to be able to do many projects for them.
Advice
I would tell them to be open to every opportunity given to them. Even though some things you may not be interested to at first, it can turn out to be something you really like. Even if its not, having a wide set of skills is very valuable to future employers and a way to open your mind and critical thinking skills.

What I wish was different
Unfortunately Covid-19 was a problem, so the internship was completely online. I wish it would've been in person for the hands on experience.

Premier College Intern
June - July 2020 • Little Rock, AR
What I liked
The supervisors and senior leadership were very involved in the intern program. They were very invested in teaching the interns about what a career with the AFCS is really like. Their goal was for all the interns to return for full-time employment after graduation, so they made sure to give us plenty of experience while we were there.
What I wish was different
Since I did the internship in 2020, I couldn't go to the Little Rock AFB to work as I had originally planned. The whole program was done virtually, which meant workdays were basically full of training sessions over WebEx. I was able to learn a lot, but I wish I had been able to work on my base in person.
Advice
The supervisors genuinely care about your success at the AFCS, so take advantage of that. Reach out to them with any questions, no matter how small or large, and they will always be so happy to give you advice. This internship provided the opportunity to get a lot of face-to-face time with senior leaders, which is pretty unheard of for people lower in the organization. Making those connections now can be a huge boost if you take a full-time position there in the future.

Electronics Engineering Intern
May - July 2020 • Warner Robins, GA
What I liked
Got to work closely with other interns on a project tailored to our time schedule, but still similar to what I would do if I actually worked there.
What I wish was different
I wish the internships had been longer so that I would be able to work on a few different projects. I also wish the internship was closer to my home so that I would still be able to spend time with my family.

What I liked
I liked the exposure that I had gained within the Air Force. I have learned about the many opportunities I can receive within the Air Force. The people I had worked around had great energy and made it enjoyable in the work environment. I had some great memories with them.
What I wish was different
I wish I got exposed to more challenging and fun projects.
Advice
It definitely starts out slow but overtime with the benefits you receive, it will be well worth it.
