Aim High

Assistant Teacher

June - July 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The supervisors, teachers, and students at Aim High are all such phenomenal people! We were given a lot of professional development and curriculum prep time as part of our summer schedule, and I learned so much about teaching from the other staff. The kids were so fun to be around and I loved getting to engage with them over curriculum that felt relevant to their lives.

College teaching intern

June - July 2019 • East Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the structure of the program. It allowed the middle school students to get some much needed exposure to some of the concepts that they will likely face in the upcoming school year. Also was very laid back as an internship. The mission of the program spoke to me personally, so it was a lot easier for me to work through the more difficult times, which come with any position in which you work with children. The leadership there was amazing. They had interns paired up with actual teachers so that we could get mentorship from a person who actually works in the field and has credentials. overall, a great learning environment.

What I wish was different

I wish the program would allow for more students to work with. There are plenty of kids in East Palo Alto that could benefit from this program.

Advice

Make sure you are good with middle school kids. They can be mean and act out constantly.

Working with students from my community and preventing the summer slide!

What I wish was different

I wish I would have done more research for my capstone project in grad schools.

Advice

Get to know all the students. The five weeks goes by so fast and by the end of the internship, it’ll be so hard saying bye to them.
