Volunteer Coordinator

May - June 2019 • Cairo, Cairo Governorate

What I liked

Performed a women empowerment initiative by AIESEC GUC calling for gender equality in Egypt. The volunteer experience was amazing once I had contact with different ages, from 7 years olds kids to their 40 years old moms. I was tutoring English in low income neighborhoods and, once I had contact with a lot of Egyptians, I was able to visit different traditional houses all over Egypt and have a better understand of their culture, focusing always on women empowerment.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked more, once I went there during Ramadan and their life change a lot. Business opened after 11 am and it closed at 4pm, maximum. It was a different month for them and I had to adapt to it.

Advice

Be open minded and try to get the most of the experience. Try new foods, try to learn the language, and get to know the people you work with.

Project Manager

June - July 2018 • Lima, Lima Province

What I liked

I loved the experience of being able to interact with local communities in a natural way! It was amazing to teach the students and the AIESEC members in Peru were very supportive.

What I wish was different

I wish there was better integration of the program into school curriculums for students.

Advice

This was a phenomenal experience, but definitely requires an open and positive attitude! Especially since the conditions in poorer provinces of Lima are very different from what you might be used to.

Volunteer

June - July 2018 • Arequipa, Arequipa Region

What I liked

I liked the vastly different environment that I was in. I got to teach Peruvian children some English as well as help their teacher with their workshops for 6 weeks. I had to practice my problem-solving skills with the different situations that my fellow volunteers and I were presented with.

What I wish was different

I hoped there would be more time to teach the children but I understood that they also had to learn other important materials from their teacher.

Advice

I would say that one needs to be solution-oriented as well as open to new ideas that can potentially alter what one had initially.

Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher

June - July 2018 • Arequipa, Arequipa Region

What I liked

I loved learning about the real culture of Perú, and not the tourist version of it. Getting to know the locals and my students and bond with them was absolutely a blessing.

What I wish was different

The program was not run very well, and due to communication barriers, the interns assigned to the school I went to were not often granted time to teach.

Advice

The real culture and society in Perú is very different and much more grim than we see in travel advertisements. Be very open minded, humble, and prepare to see many homeless and struggling families. Despite this, prepare yoir heart to both recieve and give a lot of love to the people you will meet and connect with. They have much to teach you about their lives, and you will become richer because of it.

What I liked

I spent 6 weeks in the lovely city of Bandung helping a local village start-up a business in order to sustain themselves. I really liked the diverse environment because I worked with other volunteers from around the world. It was an amazing experience to culturally immerse myself abroad.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I had an amazing experience all thanks to the students and volunteers who made this program possible.

Advice

Have an open mind and be ready to be culture-shocked. It's scary at first, but it will end up to be an experience of a lifetime. Seriously.
