Agassiz Village Summer Camp

Social Emotional Learning Coordinator

June - August 2018 • Poland, ME

What I liked

This job put me out of my comfort zone in so many ways- from leading adults in a summer camp setting (which I had never worked) to working with youth from complicated backgrounds. Overall it was an incredibly transformative experience. The relationships I made with the staff members and the impressions I made on the campers (and vice versa) are memories and experiences I will hold with me for the rest of my life.

What I wish was different

It was hard being in a leadership position and overseeing counselors who had worked there previously and had also gone to camp there for many years growing up. I wish my position had been more solidified and my role at camp more concretely understood.

You need to be ready to jump into work without strict guidelines and go with the flow. At times you may be given little information to work with and it's up to you to make the best of what you do have and use your own personal skill set to succeed.
