Human Resources Intern

February - May 2018 • Manhattan Beach, CA

What I liked

I liked being able to have hands-on experience with recruitment using Indeed.

What I wish was different

The location I was assigned to. Originally, I applied to work in the Torrance location. But, was told last minute that I would be relocated to Manhattan Beach.

Advice

Communication is important. There have been times where clients have returned my calls after business hours and wanted to schedule overview meetings. After speaking them to and scheduling their meetings, I had to relay the information back to the lead. Don't be afraid to reach out!

Digital Marketing Intern

May 2019 • Glastonbury, CT

What I liked

When I was applying, I originally thought that an internship was going to be sitting in an office grabbing coffees and doing some paperwork with the occasional phone calls. That's not what my internship was like at all. I was on the phone talking to business owners visiting different businesses and engaging with employees fighting for better benefits. I really enjoyed that my experience was extremely Hands-On. Something that I did really like about the Glastonbury office I was assigned to is that everyone is extremely friendly and weird all the time. There's always somebody there who's willing to help you and talk you through anything. I did have a panic attack while I was in the office one day and I have multiple people that I could talk to to work through it. You really feel like the people are with you.

What I wish was different

Something that did bother me about the office Dynamic was that because they are so many agents visiting businesses all the time not everybody comes into the office every day. It is a little rough when you're expecting to see a specific person and they're not there. This is both a good and a Bad Thing. Having such a flexible schedule allows you to get other things done and work on your own time. This did force me to have some self-control and good time management skills to get my work done. However it did make it a little harder 2 really sit down with my district coordinator to discuss some of the bigger issues I was having with their CRM system.

Advice

One of the skills I really got to work on was my oral and written communication. I'm extremely shy and one thing that I cannot do is speak in front of a group. Learning to give a presentation in a conference room was one of the things that Aflac taught me how to do. They taught me not only to just get up and do it but to laugh about it when you make mistakes because it's okay and it happens to everyone. My only advice would be to just get up and try something your not comfortable with... It gets easier

Summer Associate

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the environment at the NYC office for Aflac. The employees and managers made us feel welcome and assisted us when needed. I had a lot of opportunities to lead a group of other interns and I also was a part of what was meaningful work.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would recommend for interns to keep an open mind and be ready to take charge in the internship. As with many internships and jobs, the experience is what you make of it. The more you put into the internship with Aflac, the more you will get out of it.

Universal Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the environment. The work culture was easy to get comfortable in.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been more structured and that there at least had been a stipend to cover travel costs and/or food.

Advice

Only take this opportunity if you can afford to not be paid. It is a great place to make connections and get your foot in the door but it is difficult to to your best when you are worried about having money.

Business Intern

June - September 2019 • Santa Monica, CA

What I liked

I liked the organization of the office and the training that was offered to the new interns.

What I wish was different

I wish there was less pressure on the new hires. The office managers and supervisors were stern due to the fact that we were their breadwinners and making their money because of Aflac's commission-based system.

Advice

Be able to try your best and be confident in your social skills!

What I liked

Time is on your own, get paid for the work you do (commission) , awesome team and management who will be by your side. Professional training with actual employees, sales makes good money. Learned how to approach business owners and CEO's and be able to expand my social capabilities. Learned about health and life insurance and the ins and outs.

What I wish was different

Someone being on top of me to make sure I follow my "schedule". And to have had a car with better gas mileage.

Advice

You need to be on top of your own time and be diligent or else you will not succeed. Make a schedule and follow it! Need to work smarter/more efficient than harder. Requires someone who is not shy and scared of failure.

Sales and Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Norwalk, CT

What I liked

The environment was very motivating and encouraging. I was able to gain a lot of experience consulting with other business professionals and learn about the Accident and Health Insurance Industry. I was treated just like every other associate, and held accountable just like every other agent. I was able to experience what it is like to work in a professional work setting utilizing communication skills, time management, and interpersonal skills.

What I wish was different

I wish the compensation was different.

Advice

Be prepared to work hard if you want to see earnings over the course of your internship. It is long hours and lots of information that must be absorbed but I have never learned so much about myself, my work ethic, and where I see myself in terms of my career.

Insurance Agent

July - August 2019 • Harrisburg, PA

What I liked

The freedom to work on my own schedule, whenever I was available, and be my own boss. I also got to learn a lot about sales strategy and network with a lot of interesting people.

What I wish was different

The pay was commission based, which was hard for me because I only did the job for two months and usually it takes longer than that to get the connections needed to make a sale. I paid to work this job because I had to pay for licensing, and I made almost nothing the whole summer.

Advice

I would only take this internship if you are serious about going into insurance after graduation. That way, you can keep your contacts and experience from the summer as you go into your career.
