AES Corporation

Engineer Co-Op

May - August 2023 • Moraine, OH

What I liked

I liked and enjoyed multiple aspects of my first Summer Co-Op at AES. I enjoyed going out to the field to learn, observe, and help the crews during different jobs. I really enjoyed being viewed as a full-time employee and given actual engineering/design work even though I have only been at AES for a couple months. I loved that if I ever had any questions on what I was working on or just in general I was able to go talk to any of my coworkers. My coworkers were always extremely nice and helpful in getting me up to speed. Overall, I love that I have come to find power extremely interesting, and I am grateful that I am able to learn so much information about it.

What I wish was different

There is not much I would wish to be different. This was my first semester as a Co-Op at AES, so I just wish I knew more about power in the beginning. In my first couple of weeks, I had to mainly watch videos, do research, and ask a lot of questions in order to get up to speed about power. The work environment and my coworkers were all amazing. They helped guide me in the right direction and showed me a lot throughout this Co-Op.

Advice

My main piece of advice would be to learn as much as you can. Do not be scared to ask your coworkers questions because as a Co-Op you are there to learn and experience as much as you can. Go out to the field as much as you can because you can learn a lot by observing and asking the crews questions. Ask if you can shadow other departments to get a feel of how the company works and see how everything is intertwined.
