What I liked

I really enjoyed getting some experience in the field that I wish to pursue . This allowed me a broad range of networking opportunities that can be used in the future

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more experience out on the field, instead I was more behind the scenes

Advice

I would definitely recommend it to others as this will allow for you to meet people that can help in this field. Be willing to learn new things

Computer Hardware Engineering Intern

January - June 2020 • Austin, TX

What I liked

The people and the amount of experience I was able to gain while on campus in Austin was great. Everyone was friendly and inviting and gave me things to do and work on along with advice.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to stay on campus during the entire time but I had to go remote for part of it due to COVID-19.

Advice

Look at companies that are not on Handshake that you know about personally. Sometimes those can be the best places to work so long as you apply yourself and work to learn as much as you can in even a small amount of time.

Design Engeering Intern

June - August 2019 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

I starting learning C++ in CS253 in Spring 2019 and was able to continue coding in C++ for the summer at AMD. It was very good to learn how C++ is used differently (and similarly) in general (in the class) and in a business setting (at AMD). The community was great and there were a few events put on by the intern program that were great.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have connected with the other interns a bit more, aside from that, everything was pretty awesome.

Advice

AMD is definitely more ECE focused, but I know a lot of different types of people work there, so I bet a lot of different types of people could succeed in an internship there. It's definitely a no-nonsense sort of company: they're trying (and succeeding, in my opinion) to make the best processors in the world and they're trying to do it efficiently as possible.

Co-op Engineer

January - August 2018 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I liked the autonomy the team afforded me. I was encouraged to bring forward ideas and actually ended up working on one of my ideas as a long term project. AMD has a very open learning environment and asking questions is encouraged. It is a very progressive culture and there are a lot of community service efforts that AMD encourages.

What I wish was different

A clearer communication of expectations earlier in the co-op term might have helped a little, but the open-endedness helped me define a co-op experience that was moulded to my skills and interests.

Advice

Show a lot of initiative. Tasks don't always come to you. Sometimes you have to actively look for work to do, but that is a great opportunity for growth and also to have a broad/wide co-op experience.
