We were researching how to synthesize drug leads for developing countries in a cost effective way, so the thought that one day our research could save lives made this job enjoyable.

I really enjoyed to personal relationship and close work environment. It fostered communication and group collaboration.
What I wish was different
Being a middle level manager creates an interesting dynamic of not having complete freedom but greater than normal responsibility. I struggled to find a balance of self-initiated decision making while still reporting to my superiors for approval on choices.
Advice
No matter their level, you can always learn something from everyone you come in contact with. Approaching each situation with a posture of assistance and learning creates a better environment for communication.
