Communications and Research Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

For a non-profit, AARP has so many resources. Their mission is admirable and the people who work there are extremely committed to it. Every person I met went above and beyond to make sure I felt supported and welcomed. They also have opportunities in so many departments. I met interns in advocacy, communications, research, data management, business development, digital design, and more. There's ample intern programming, so you meet fellow interns and are exposed to aspects of the business you may not see in your day-to-day. I highly recommend this internship to any student looking for exposure to a large company with a laudable mission.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave return offers-- but that is not their business model.

Advice

Utilize all the resources offered to you. Every person there is so kind and willing to help you along your professional path. Don't be scared to email people and request coffee chats. Don't be scared to speak up if an opportunity arises that you want to pursue.
