I'd ask your employer, if you are interning, what specific job you will have in the office before accepting an internship and try to organize introductions with as many people in your company as possible!

I loved my coworkers at 826LA and how welcoming the entire office was to newcomers. I also loved getting to meet a bunch of awesome kids who were eager to learn about writing.

Advice
When working for AmeriCorps, I would recommend living at home or at a very inexpensive housing situation.
