5150 Digital Marketing Group

Digital Strategist

January 2021 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Since beginning work at 5150 I knew that it would be unlike any internship I’ve had before, but in the best of ways. As an intern you are given the autonomy to pursue projects and be yourself while learning the finer points of the financial services and marketing industries. Joe is a fantastic mentor who is constantly teaching, and the trust he placed in me as an intern gave me the confidence to grow in a way previous internships hadn’t. The environment of the office is amazing, I felt apart of the team from the moment I walked in.

What I liked

I started working with Joe back when 5150 DMG was called AciesGroup as a junior at ASU. From day one, it was clear that the firm was dedicated to developing advanced capital introduction products that rivaled the likes of the industry giants. Even in the fast paced environment of 5150, Joe was extremely patient and made sure I understood the process every step of the way, and trusted me to spearhead my own projects which allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding than I could have imagined. I was extremely happy with the way this firm balances camaraderie with an aspect of individualism where you can really gain valuable experience from leading projects and tasks. Additionally, this role put me in a situation where I was able to meet some truly amazing people that I would not have dreamed I would ever have the chance to meet. I was able to assist Joe in organizing talent for conferences with people such as Bret Baier, Nikki Haley, Jim Albaugh, General James Mattis, Jerry Colangelo, and Gregg Popovich.

Financial Analyst Intern

October 2016 - December 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I worked at 5150 for almost two years when it was AciesGroup and can honestly say it was one of the most influential and important experiences that I had in college, and more important to my development as a young professional than my coursework. Time and time again I found myself applying concepts and ideas that I had learned in the office when completing my coursework. While it's a fast paced, demanding environment, Joe made every day interesting and was one of the best bosses I've had the pleasure to work for. He was always in the office teaching me and giving me new projects to dive into and always looked out for everyone that worked for him.

IT Intern

May - August 2020 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The work environment was great and it provided a place to be free thinking. I was constantly reassured to ask questions and not to be afraid to make mistakes. The dynamic at 5150 DMG was a collaborative team effort where everyone’s success was celebrated. Everyday that I came into work I was motivated to give 100% effort because that was what was being exemplified by not only my co-workers, but also my bosses. The owners of 5150 DMG gave me a lot of freedom and responsibility right at the outset and I appreciated the chance to expand my skill set.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to work in person at the office location. COVID-19 changed many of the workplace dynamics across the country and 5150 DMG pivoted to this new normal of being remote as quickly as possible. Working in this online environment put a different kind of pressure on accomplishing tasks at a certain due dates and communicating with the team without having that face-to-face interaction.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to take in all the information that is accessible to you while working at 5150 DMG. The knowledge that I will take away from my time spent working with everyone at 5150 DMG will help me navigate my future career path. I was able to get hands on experience that I would not have been able to get in other positions or work sectors. Moving into my final year of college, I know that I want to work in an environment where I am able to grow as a person and as part of a team. This was the exact work environment that 5150 DMG embodied. I am grateful for my time with 5150 DMG and would be lucky to cross paths with them in the future.

Intern

What I liked

The environment was great, the team was great, and the work was great. It was very engaging every day. All the interns worked as a team on different projects and on one collective goal. The founders were great to work under. They were very thorough in what needed to get done and very helpful along the way. With a ton of experience in the financial services industry the founders were very patient in helping the interns learn more about the industry. It was a great experience.

What I wish was different

COVID caused some complications and required some WFH time. I wish we didn't have to leave the office for a couple weeks.

Advice

Don't worry if you don't know much about the industry. Everyone is eager to help you learn more. It helps to take time to learn yourself as well. As long as you can accomplish the necessary tasks you'll do great.

Advice

Learn as much as possible, its hard to find people who are as experienced as Joe and John, who will help teach you about the field while working as well.
