Cold. There are very few weather conditions that cancel a broomball game. I would bundle up in many layers, including snowpants, boots, jacket, and warm hat that would be able to fit under my helmet. I would throw my whistle around my neck and head out. Once at the rinks, I would check in, grab a helmet, and go out to the rink to let the prior workers go. If it had been snowing, I would shovel off the rink between games (if we had time). Before games, I would talk with the other refs at my rink and we would decide who would work where for the game. We would call a Captains' meeting and tell them what step check it would be and remind them of a few rules. Then start of the game would be called and, once the teams are ready, ball would drop. Lots of moving back and forth, to watch and make calls. After my shift, I would get a cup of hot chocolate and check out.

A day in the life of a broomball referee includes:
Checking the schedule to verify you are still scheduled to work
Getting WARM clothes on as you will be outside from 8pm-12am and not moving as much as the players
Showing up early to your shift to make sure everything is set for the games and getting the score sheets
Starting the game on time and ensure everyone is playing safe and fairly
When all the games are over, give the score sheets to your supervisor and make sure everything is put away before leaving
