I believe that having a health background was very useful. Peace Corps only works in countries when they are invited by the respective government. As a result, these countries are often in dire need of assistance. Peace Corps Volunteers are often filling in a gap in the county's healthcare system and will possibly find themselves in situations where they are seen as the most qualified person to address health concerns, since there might be limited access to healthcare. In my experience, knowledge is key to being a successful volunteer. The more knowledge you have, the better your reputation will be in the area, which will make it easier to guide others who seek you and find possible opportunities for project development.
