Definitely ask about digital opportunities. Navigating social media platforms, learning SEO tactics and photo editing, etc. are all essential for driving readers to your website. Learning good interview tips are also important for establishing trust between your interviewees and you. Often times, they will divulge personal details and trust you to write accurately about them, so you have to be professional. And, it’s harder than you think to ask the right questions :) Ask the right questions, and your story will be a hit. Last, ask about the magazine’s/newspaper’s writing style. You will be challenged with writing something short and clever that engages the reader, so I’d recommend reading past publications to digest the different formats and guidelines.
Writing, reading comprehension, and proofreading skills are probably the most important qualities for the Editor position at Watching America. A core function of the Editor is ensuring that articles follow grammar guidelines and AP style, and that the articles are relevant to the overall mission, which is translating articles about America published in foreign publications, especially published in languages other than English and not otherwise available in English. International and/or multilingual experience, as well as a general interest in international current events, are also core characteristics sought after in a Watching America Editor. The editor also finds relevant articles by using translation tools or foreign language comprehension ability. Time management and technology literacy are also necessary. The Editor will manage themselves and a team of translators to keep a continuous stream of quality articles published to the online newspaper.
