Former Patient Access Representative at Northwell Health
about 2 years ago
The way I got my position as a patient access representative was first interning the hospital. A few years ago, Northwell Health in Huntington offered an internship program for college students who wanted to pursue a career in healthcare but didn't know exactly what they wanted. The internships included finances, lab, food and nutrition, etc. Mine was in admitting and there I was able to gain patient contact (I was deciding on whether the medical route was for me at the time) and it gave me access to learning how a hospital functions as well as how an ER functions ( I was also interested in being an injury epidemiologist where most, if not all, my research would be in the ER). So there are mentorship programs, but I am unsure if they have them now as times have changed. The internship was also paid.
