Strong communication skills are really important. Also, understanding of stats and machine learning is important. My team uses decision trees a lot, but I think it is helpful to have hands-on experience with logistic regression, neural networks, market basket analysis (frequent item set mining), support vector machines, etc. Ability to code in SAS and SQL is required. Ability to code in R and Python are nice-to-have’s

As a risk consultant, I have found it pivotal to have an open mind with exceptional team working skills. You spend a lot of time with the same people so it’s important to be able to speak with these people in order to gain knowledge about area you aren’t familiar with. In addition, the risk division is growing in every company and it still has a lot of growing to do. With that in mind, ya always a good idea to keep an open mind and ask questions because you could raise important points that others may not have thought of yet.
