A day doing research as an undergraduate will differ wildly depending on what part of the school year you're in and how long you have been on the project. During the summer students typically go full-time and will attend all-group meetings with peripherally related projects, which will inspire and educate you, along with doing your own work and meeting with your advisor about issues you're running into. During the school year, I go into the office much less and only touch base with my advisor when I either have an issue or have finally solved an issue. We are only allowed 20hours a week in semester but most students do not even get near this limit most weeks because of busy course loads.
