The Pharmacy Intern position is unique because it's an intermediate between a technician and a pharmacist. You will do the normal technician-like tasks, such as filling prescriptions, but you will also be able to administer vaccines, make OTC recommendations to patients, counsel patients on their medications, take phone calls from prescribers, etc. You get a lot of hands on experience for activities that you learn in skills lab at school.
You have the same duties as the techs and some additional pharmacist duties. Examples of tech duties include typing, filling, and dispensing. Examples of pharmacist duties include transfers, counseling, and vaccine administration. The only pharmacist task you cannot do as an intern is verify.
Kind-of like a technician, however you can do whatever the pharmacist you are working under will allow. As a P1-P3 this typically means taking/giving controlled medication transfers, OTC advice (after OTC course), general medication counseling, and a lot of learning and observation - all on top of normal technician duties.
Start by performing opening duties (smart count, clean up from last night), then begin filling medications that are on the cue. As patients come in, you help with pick up or drop off prescriptions. You also will work on any third party rejections with insurance.
When I should up, I usually determine where I am needed most normally either filling scripts or helping customers at checkout/drive-thru. When it slows down, I will call patients that need to pick up or will just putting away meds that haven't been picked up.
There is a work flow at each Walgreens pharmacy so each technician/intern has exposure to various things. One of the main jobs is talking to patients, either at the counter or drive-thru, to get them their medications. Once you feel comfortable and have the knowledge as an intern, you can counsel patients on their medications. The other main part of the job is filling prescriptions. It is important to be focused and thorough in this area. When there are no customers and nothing to fill, we have assigned tasks like clearing out expired medications, filling the robot, and entering flu shots.
