I have a certain amount of responsibility, in that I am always trying to find savings/cost reductions and I have the ability to approve POs and other contracts that are worth a certain amount. I help to create purchasing strategies that will benefit the company most within current market conditions. An example of this would be whether we should consolidate a commodity to one or two vendors or do the opposite and decentralize the commodity. There are many factors that go into those decisions and working with a team is absolutely necessary to formulating a plan that looks at all possible angles. Also, as much as everyday, but usually 2-3 times per week, I am meeting with new vendors or current ones. About half the time they meet me at my office, and half the time is at one of their sites. This gives me the chance to meet new people and also learn (and ultimately compare) how different vendors approach situations. Seeing how one company manufactures vs. another or how one will decide how to distribute vs. another can be immensely informative on how they might fit your goals and objectives.
