I would say that to succeed at Citi the first step is to be passionate about your career, ask yourself: what am I doing or plan to do is going to make me happy everyday in my life?. If the answer is yes and you plan to develop your career at Citi, I guarantee you that you will be very successful, Why? Because your are not doing a job, you are doing your passion which brings you happiness and that positive energy will be reflected in your work, your coworkers and everyone surrounding you.
In my case, hard work, multi-tasking and ability to work long hours. Sometimes it maybe a bit difficult to get a work-life balance, and adjustments need to be made. In terms of technical knowledge, most of the training would hopefully be provided by the staff where learning must be done by working alongside the team assigned. Having a good grasp in basic accounting terms and functions (Debit/Credit) can be important though.
Success at Citi is pretty much what it takes to succeed anywhere. Act with integrity, make your clients happy (and they will often suggest your services to friends/family), build relationships with business partners (mortgage specialists, business bankers, wealth management, etc.) and they will feed business your way as long as you feed them too. Make the "boring" bank environment fun for colleagues and clients while maintaining professionalism. Also, always be willing to learn and take on new challenges that may move beyond your explicit job description, this will help with sales and to gain visibility for promotions/raises.
