You must be a people person. You must be kind and have the customer’s best interest at heart. You must also be patient with people. Some customers will have you follow them around the store trying different items without being able to decide what they want. Be patient and help them the best you can.
You need good communication skills, and you will need to have a high tolerance for rude people. Also you need to be hardworking and determined or no one will like working with you. No one likes a lazy worker.
You need good people skills, need to be able to work with a cash register (willing to learn to use it), and the ability to be flexible with which department you are in. There were a lot of days when I would be moved around since there were people who would call out.
Be able to keep calm in stressful situations; customers can be rude or demanding, especially during the holidays or during sale events. Have the ability to stand for long periods of time and keep busy when things are slow. Be able to have basic quantitative skills and figure out the computer systems for the cash registers. Be reliable and punctual as a worker. Have the knowledge to answer customer questions and interact with them in a positive way.
