My personal experience with work-life balance at IBM was probably the worst in my over 30 years of professional experience. It was an average 60-hour work week. Less commonly, but on a regular basis, I had work weeks that approached 80 hours. I was on-call 24/7/365 and had both a pager and cell phone to provide escalated global support for large customers with urgent problems, but fortunately wasn't paged often. I had 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM conference calls multiple times a week to manage the off-shore part of my team. Work-life balance is the reason that I left IBM.
