Former Interpretive Intern position at National Park Service
over 2 years ago
Most supervisors that I have met are looking for passionate interpreters that get excited about their topics and are willing to try out creative techniques to engage their audience. I would highlight any public speaking experience you have, or experience leading or teaching a group (camp counselor, led trainings for a student organization, did outreach events for a lab/institution of any kind, etc.). Did you come up with any fun activities to help people connect to a topic? They are looking for friendly, positive, reliable people that enjoy a lot of social interaction and being the point person for a wide range of visitor needs. In my experience, your academic background matters less than your personal interest in the topics that you will be interpreting. Finally, I would highlight any experience you have working with people from backgrounds different than your own, and demonstrate your ability and interest in welcoming people of different races, socioeconomic classes, languages, and cultures to the park.
