Ownership on work depends a lot on the project you will be involved with as an intern. For example, the research I did with my mentor under the internship turned into a project that I continued to work on even after the internship was over and we aim to publish our research. Other interns however, worked on research projects that ended when the internship finished - they still did a lot of the analysis/work on their own with guidance from their mentor. Thus, it is up to you and your mentor to figure out what your interests are and the best timeline for your project which affects ownership the most. You definitely get a lot of exposure to working on many parts of your research project even if you choose to work on a research project only upto the end of the internship.
