I would not recommend a student to ask questions about pay, patient-sensitive information, or personal vacation time (many students volunteer during the summer). In addition, if inquiring about what it is like working at MSKCC, be careful with the phrasing. Many hospitals, especially a cancer hospital, may have a depressing atmosphere at times. Instead, one should relate the question to a top priority of the MSKCC staff: patient comfort levels. Phrase the question something along the lines of, “Though the atmosphere may be emotionally challenging at times, how would you describe MSKCC’s culture in terms of how the staff interacts not only with each other, but also with patients in order to make them feel comfortable and welcomed?”
