I think the biggest skill is the willingness and eagerness to learn and be very open minded when it comes to research and acting on advice from others. Depending on the position or group a student is joining, there might certain skills (technical) the lab would like you have before joining. Also, being able to build interpersonal relationships between other scientists in the lab is an extremely important skill. A lot of the technical and problem solving skills you will acquire will come through the interaction with your coworkers. Lastly, I think it is also very important to have fun and enjoy the research experience.
