Lawn and garden is primarily a summer/seasonal position (they cut L&G hours in the off season). All sales associates at Walmart have the same essential duties: customer service (helping customers find what they need, giving advice), organizing (lots and lots of organizing) labeling, stocking, and otherwise just maintaining shelves, and cashier work (for some). Some departments, like lawn and garden, have more specific duties in addition to these. In lawn and garden, we have to water and keep on top of deliveries of seasonal flowers, manage the soil & mulch drive-through, and deal with heavier products like outdoor furniture, lawn mowers, and grills. Lawn and garden requires more heavy lifting than an average sales position in my opinion, but you are not expected to lift anything you're uncomfortable with. I have also had experience as a fabrics and crafts associate, where the only department-exclusive duty aside from the standard ones is cutting fabric for customers.
Being a Lawn and Garden Sales Associate gives you one of the most enjoyable, versatile jobs at Walmart. I am responsible not only for tending to the plants, but maintaining the integrity of the Garden Center, running the register, cleaning and styling both the summer displays as well as the Christmas trees, and much more. There is never a dull moment; I am always on my feet and always adapting to the changing seasons. The best part is, unlike many other retail jobs, I get to spend large portions of my day outside.
My experience was at a Walmart Neighborhood Market location, so it may differ in some ways from the average experience of a Walmart sales associate. That being said, the general structure is relatively consistent across the board. You will clock-in, and report to your supervisor for the day's tasks. Most sales associates will do lots of inventory throughout the day as new merchandise arrives, and will probably stock shelves as well. You will be expected to actively assist customers when possible, though it is normal to have to defer to your supervisor if you cannot solve the issue yourself. You are allowed a one-hour break after working for 4 hours.
Depending on which department of the store you are assigned, sale associates tasks vary, but the overall task would be to assist customers in locating and purchasing goods. They have to know the products sold in their department to answer questions customers may have. They also stock items on shelves and have to know how to work a register to checkout customers. They also have special tasks given, for example I work in electronics so a special task I have is to know how to activate phones and sell contracts for Verizon. Not everyone in the electronic department will know how to do this. If you work in Hardwares you might learn to mix paint.
My life at Walmart is actually pretty great. Your coworkers become close friends and your managers are usually pretty relaxed. On the floor you will work with your team in your department to complete task such as stocking the shelves, helping customers, and possibly running the cashier. The hours can be tiring but the company gives you breaks every two hours, so make sure you take them! The environment in Walmart is actually pretty relaxed and can sometimes actually be pretty fun, but sometimes it can be chaotic .
As a sales associate you will be asked to perform the duties of your department whether it is electronics, check out, clothing, food and so on. However don't think it ends there. Be prepared to learn new skills from other departments as there will absolutely be times you are asked to work around the store when they need coverage in another area because someone went to lunch or break or they called in or are excessively busy.
At Walmart, a Deli Associate is responsible for many duties concerning the deli. Because I had the closing shift, I was responsible for sanitizing the utensils used to prepare the food and products sold at the deli, cleaning the oven used to cook the rotisserie chickens and the fryer used for our hot food products, and cleaning the display case that holds the various meats and cheeses, and servicing any customers who needed assistance if I could do so. In addition to preparing the refrigerated and frozen products to be sold the next day as well as maintaining a supply of fresh hot food until before closing down the deli.

A day in the life of a deli associate looks like clocking in for a scheduled shift and going into the deli. It’s fairly self-run so the first thing to do is check levels of both hot and cold foods and make note of which foods need to be prepared. Then you will deal with customers needs and facing/stocking shelves in your section and keeping the deli section clean. Delegating and preparing the appropriate foods as needed.
As a Deli Associate, I do a lot of food preparation. I cook rotisserie chickens, from their raw state, until they have an internal temperature that meets the requirements of food safety. I fry foods, anywhere from fried catfish fillets to various fried wings (bone-in or boneless). I cut meat and cheese for sandwiches, or for whatever the customer requires. I deal with a lot of customers, as it is apart of my job, some very pleasant and easy to talk to, others can be difficult; the best way to deal with such customers is to put on a smile and do your best to serve them to your ability. The customer comes first, always. That is something you will learn in orientation if hired. Since I work the closing shift, I am responsible for cleaning dishes, putting food away for the next day — so as not to waste it — making sure everything is clean and ready for the people coming in to open the deli early the next day, we clean the large expanse of floors behind the deli counter, and we throw away heavy barrels of trash each night. You may get burned, but that's the price we pay to offer the best service possible.
