a typical day looked like going into the office where my two PIs and other student research intern were. I had my own desktop but also brought in my laptop just to look at data better. My project had me focusing on reading MRI images and learning how to use data analysis systems such as xterm to compute the data and images. Some mornings my PIs and I had meetings about what we hoped to accomplish with the data or just had discussions as to why we were looking at these images in the first place and what they were to help with in this project. Halfway during the day, we would have a lunch break with people in the office who were working on other projects. Then after about an hour we would come back into the office and continue analyzing data. then around 4 or 5 we would leave. I forgot to mention that I came into the office around 9.

This can vary depending on the size and focus of the research group/lab. I was part of a smaller lab (1 PI, 1 post doc, 2 RAs), so I basically was involved in nearly all aspects of research: experiment design, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, manuscript writing, etc. In larger labs, RAs may have more specific delegations (e.g. mostly focused on data collection), so it's good to get a sense of this when applying.
