It really depends who you are interviewing to work with. For Dr. Sommers, I would definitely have an interest in issues relevant to her (e.g., feminism, free speech, etc.). Another important piece was being able to work independently. As noted above, Dr. Sommers is not around, so being able to take initiative and do work on your own is important. Overall, show an interest in your potential scholar’s work (including having relevant questions), be interested in AEI as a whole, and emphasize how interning at AEI is an important step in your early career. Another thing I’ll mention that I was told was that AEI generally uses GPA (3.7+) and school name as a qualifier for whether somebody gets an interview. However, if you write a great cover letter showing passion for the material, that can compensate. I also had some relevant research experience, so that can help a lot too, however I don’t think it’s required. I applied twice before I got an interview and offer.

I would highlight any academic writing that you have done as well as skills in statistical coding, if you have them. Otherwise, demonstrate that you keep up-to-date with economics news and policy. Highlight a strong work ethic and the ability to collaborate with others.
