Former Political/Economic Intern at U.S. Department of State

I interviewed for a political/economic intern position with the U.S. Department of State. The interview process consisted of a phone interview and an in-person interview.
The phone interview was a basic screener gauging my level of interest in the position and knowledge of the job description. I was also asked about my academic background in political science and economics and my availability. The in-person interview was behavioral and situational. I was asked about my coursework and knowledge about policy issues relating to international trade and international relations. I was also asked about how I would approach and work through research projects.
I would recommend familiarizing yourself with current issues and major news stories on international politics and international economics. You should be prepared to talk about these to demonstrate your interest and knowledge to the interviewer. You should also be ready to talk about relevant coursework and how this has helped to prepare you for doing policy-relevant research in international relations.
