You will always be given at least one project to work on during the summer. Daily work depends on the location that you are working. I did not work on a mine site, but instead did research with the mitigation control group. This included working in the field, lab, and office. Working at a mine site may include mostly working in the field and office.
Freeport also has events for interns to tour other mine sites, to participate in leadership training, to volunteer, and an intern conference at the end of the summer where some interns are chosen to present the work they did that summer to other interns and professionals in your field. I would be involved in as many of these events as possible to network and make an impression on the company.

I worked about 50% in the field and 50% in the office. You have to be a self-starter. Many days, I would ask the engineers and scientists if I could out in the field with them for the day, because I didnt want to do just office work that day. There is a huge variety of work, so there wasn't really a typical day. Sometimes I would be out taking soil or water samples all day, and sometimes I'd be doing data entry all day. Every intern gets a project to focus on for the summer.
