Former Third Grade Teacher at Aurora Public Schools
over 1 year ago
The day to day routine of a third grade teacher can vary by school. Some schools departmentalize so a third grade teacher could teach only two subjects a day and classes switch or they could teach all subjects with the same class.
The day begins with greeting students. Students eat breakfast in the classroom and then instruction starts. The flow of the day will vary, but students will receive instruction in math, science/social studies, reading, and writing. Additionally, there is a time block set aside for English Language Development (ELD) and Academic Language Development (ALD). Students who are English proficient will go to ALD classes and students who are English language learners (ELLs) will go to ELD classes. This is approximately 45 minutes of the day. Students will also go to a specials class (music, art, PE) and have lunch and recess. As a teacher, you will be responsible for maintaining the schedule and transitioning students to and from the various activities/classes.
As a teacher at Aurora Public Schools, you will have a class full of students from various backgrounds. Each student will come to you with unique gifts and unique needs. As a teacher in APS, you will need to adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students as well as be prepared to tackle challenges and be flexible in teaching, thinking, and actions.
Once per week, teachers will have staff meetings and there will be time in the afternoons or mornings for teachers to plan for instruction and grade.
