Former Curatorial Intern at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
about 2 years ago
I had the fortune of doing a bunch of different things while at the Hirshhorn. My principle responsibilities were research and writing. My supervisor would give me the name of an artist or exhibition and a research question, and I would use the Smithsonian's resources to compile a packet of information that answered that question. I would compile artist bios, research provenance, maintain images lists, translate articles, attend departmental meetings, and shadow my supervisor.
Your daily responsibilities will depend on the phase of the exhibition with which your internship overlaps, and the interests you express to your supervisor during the interview. If you express and interest in writing over research, then they'll try to give you more writing assignments, and vice versa.
