If you don’t have a written sample of a game story, make sure to have one done to bring in. Some of the positions will offer the opportunity to write features as well, so writing samples of this kind will help in this instance.
The most important bit is to be aware of the absurdly quick turnaround of game stories. Papers and outlets are looking for reliable people that will have a workable story for print or publish nearly instantly after a game or story wraps up. (A bonus is familiarity with the art of stat keeping as most high schools won’t reliably keep it for you.)
Being knowledgable and prepared will show you have the forward thinking and discipline to do the job.
