You choose what kind of reporter you want to be. You can pick your own hours to work as long as your stories are in before deadline.
The news editor typically gives you at least two stories to work on each week, and you can also pitch your own ideas at the weekly meeting.
And then it's just like every other reporter job: seek truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, be accountable and transparent. You learn to balance career work with homework.
